With the incredibly light Ghost XT and trendsetting Mutant in the range, one could assume MauiSails may not be focusing as much time on their long-standing Global power wave. Rest assured, it has not been forgotten, as it sees at least as many advancements as any other sail in the line. With subtle changes to the boom length, construction and stiffness, what once seemed to be a sail geared towards only the burliest of sailors is transformed into a wellmannered ride that any size or level of rider will love. It still has an impressive amount of power, but with a lighter build and shorter boom there’s a greater sense of efficiency added. As you accelerate, the power is still very solid, but once up to speed that grunt disappears, giving you great control in even the gustiest conditions.
All this performance adds up to a sail that will easily do double duty in the waves or in bump-and-jump conditions. On the wave, it will readily de-power, although it does take a little more effort than sails with a shorter boom length. For this reason, we feel it’s best for stronger riders in the waves. But it’s this longer boom length that makes it such a great bump-and-jump sail, as it never feels twitchy in any way. The quick acceleration and slightly higher draft also made it a favorite for jumping, as we knew we’d always get max air time.
MauiSails has jumped into the high-tech material race with both feet. On the Global we loved how the new SYLF (small yarn/light film) laminate is used to perfection, losing weight in the most noticeable part of the sail without any loss of top-end control.
