2013 Aerotech Phantom 5.0

Mar 17, 2013

Luff: 409
Boom: 162

Standing out from the crowd, the Phantom is the only six-batten wavesail on the market. Not surprisingly, the extra batten makes itself felt, with the Phantom being by far the most stable sail in the test. Add to the stability an efficient feel and you’ll find this is a sail that can cross over into bump-and-jump conditions with a speedier ride than most. One would expect the extra batten would make for a heavier feel and detract from its maneuverability, but with a forward draft position and the shortest boom length in the test, its weight feels on par with most of the other test sails. It’s easy to both sheet-in while accelerating and to oversheet in a bottom turn. The stability does make itself noticeable in rotation, as it moves from side to side with a bit more of a tug than the softer sails. While waveriding this doesn’t mean too much, as the sail rarely backwinds, and we had no problem riding it aggressively. For those looking for a sail to work on anything from a carving 360 to a flaka, here the rotation is just enough of a distraction to keep it from being a top choice.

Like all aerotechs, the Phantom is made from a number of differently spaced X-ply’s to intelligently balance weight versus durability. The other common aerotech trait the Phantom shares is a leech that seems to twist lower with downhaul tension than most other brands. We found it liked a firm yank on the downhaul, and watching the batten above the boom move towards the back of the mast became a good visual to confirm subtle changes in the leech.
